The house
Hato Garza is in the north of Apure state, in the flooded Llanos of the Orinoco—one of the most important wetlands in South America. It covers more than 7,000 hectares devoted to conserving Llanos wildlife and to rural tourism, with comfortable rooms in the middle of the savanna.
More than 300 bird species live here, along with wildlife you will hardly see together anywhere else: caimans, capybaras, river dolphins in the channel, giant anteaters, deer, anacondas and, with luck, a wild cat. The plan is simple: two guided outings a day—on horseback or by tractor for the photo safari, and by boat along the Caño Garza at dusk to see birds and dolphins—and the hottest hours by the pool, looking out over the flat plains.
The day starts before sunrise with the milking of the water buffaloes and a real Llanos breakfast. In the evening there is spit-roasted beef and, as a paid extra, you can ask for a night of harp, cuatro and maracas. Everything else is included—meals, snacks, outings and lodging—and the house staff are llaneros (Llanos locals) from the area.
